Mechanicsburg, OH — Scott Rupert is a common man with an uncommon vision, and he is “changing the way politics is done.” As a bona fide independent candidate—yes, that’s independent with a small i—he plans to win Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat by running on ideas and solutions, not on party ideology.

XENIA, OH -- The City of Xenia has decided to appeal to the Court of Common Pleas a recent arbitration decision which awarded its Fire Division Lieutenants and Captains more than $82,000 for overtime they did not work. In a decision dated January 27, 2011, arbitrator Cynthia Stanley, an attorney from Indianapolis, Indiana, found the City violated the labor agreement by temporarily assigning on-duty personnel to meet staffing needs instead of calling in off-duty officers. The situation arose during the recent financial crises when the City was only operating one fire station.

Today John Mitchel, former Republican candidate for Ohio’s Seventh Congressional District, filed suit (Case No: 2011-CV-0114) in Greene County Common Pleas Court to remove County Prosecutor Stephen K. Haller.  Mitchel alleges Haller practiced “gross misconduct” in the manner in which he defended himself and other Greene County Republican Executive Committee members in a public records request action filed in May 2009.  Mitchel also claims that Haller conspired with an assistant prosecutor to withhold public records related to the 2003 BRAC Initiative Agreement contract between Greene County and the Dayton Development Coalition.

BEAVERCREEK - As traditional fossil fuel-based energy becomes more expensive, building industry innovators are exploring ways to create building technologies that are environmentally friendly, cost effective and provide multiple benefits to the occupant. As a whole, the construction industry has poured millions of dollars into research and development to come up with building techniques that meet the demands of the public while satisfying the goals of the government’s move toward green technology.

They were once called "peace officers" because their job was to keep and encourage peace in the community; they are now called "law enforcement officers" and expect citizens to look upon them with respect, and tremble in fear when encountering them.  These are today's Police Officers here in the United States, and while they also claim to be "public servants," that seems to hardly be the case as average citizens like you and I are unable to fire them from their servant role, nor are we able to tell them to leave us alone when they intrude into our lives, or when they blatantly violate our civil rights or even State laws.  This was the case in a recent encounter I had with several Beavercreek City Police Officers.

In what is turning out to be a slap down to silly and outrageous municipalities’ abuse of power, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled today that the State rather than cities have ultimate control on gun restrictions and legislation throughout Ohio, allowing gun owners to travel throughout the State of Ohio without being concerned with local legislations which may be more restrictive than the current State laws.

Thank you for the invitation to comment on subject memo, “Better Buying Power: Mandate for Restoring Affordability and Productivity in Defense Spending.”  Except for a less-than-ambitious 2-3% expectation for reducing funding for unneeded or low priority overhead (read fraud, waste, abuse, corruption) in the way the Pentagon does business, I couldn’t agree more with your latest initiative to “support our forces at war on an urgent basis” and advance Secretary Gate’s mandate to be “respectful of the American taxpayer at a time of economic and fiscal distress.”  Right or wrong, the U.S. has committed its citizens to finance an expensive interventionist foreign policy which cannot be sustained without (1) bankrupting the U.S. economy or (2) drastically reducing wasteful, unneeded, and at times corrupt defense spending.

While attempting to obtain a list of Children Services applicants for the position of Director, I was faced with answers ranging from "I don't have it" to "I cannot give you that information," answers which could be called stonewalling by any seasoned reporter.  This forced us to obtain the records through public records requests, which were honored in a timely and efficient fashion by the Greene County Personnel Department.

Healthy Choices for Healthy Children legislation--SB 210--passed both Houses of the Ohio Legislator. The bi-partisan legislation aims to address childhood obesity. The Ohio Hospital Association also reports that more than one in three children (35.6 percent) in Ohio are overweight or obese. The bill specifically targets increased physical activity, improved nutritional options and body mass index (BMI) testing in Ohio schools. Commendable as this bill may be, its provisions like the following raise some questions:

In November 2009, in a Newsletter sent by the Greene County Children Services, Director Rhonda Reagh announced her retirement saying "This is my last, official column in the Children’s Herald as my retirement date draws near. We have so many things to be proud of over the last twelve years, but perhaps one of the most exceptional is the progress the agency, and community, has made in improving our rate of finalized adoptions."
